Keeping your PC and its drivers up to date can be a very tedious task. With so many devices to keep an eye on, and so many different manufacturers to choose from, finding the right, up to date, and official drivers can cause way more headaches then it needs to.
The goal of this article is to try and make the process of keeping at least one aspect of your computer up to date a little easier by showing some resources you can use to lessen the workload.
- Find out the Manufacturer: This seems like a no brainer, but often people don't actually know what make and model their device is. This could be for a variety of reasons. If you bought the computer pre-built, from a computer store for example, then chances are pretty good the list of what devices and who made them isn't known to you. The easiest way to find this out is by getting a system diagnosis tool that will scan your computer and give you all the information you ever wanted from it. There are many free ones out there, so do a search for "Free System Diagnosis Tool" and you should have no problems finding a good program for the task.
- Visit The Manufacturers Website: After learning the make and model of the device you want to update, find the official site and visit them. In a lot of cases, the links to driver support on these websites are not easily visible. Look for "Help" and "Support" links.
- Search The Web With The Exact Information: In some cases, devices may not be supported by their original makers anymore. If the device is an older model you may not be able to find the driver for the specific model from the manufacturers website. With the information you got from running a diagnosis, search the web for the drivers. More often than not, you'll find forum posts or other people asking for the same driver. In a lot of cases, links to driver downloads are generously given by people who know where to find the specific one you're looking for.
- Visit a Driver Site: There are quite a few driver hubs online that host a plethora of device drivers for all pieces of hardware, makes and models. Try WinDrivers or DriverGuide.
- Get Driver Updating Software: By far the easiest way of keeping your drivers up to date, the benefits of having driver updating software are beyond the scope of this article. However, as a small intro, these programs scan all your devices, find which ones are out of date, download and install them with one click. A lot of times, these programs find updated drivers for devices you wouldn't have thought were out of date.
