Do you struggle with cravings? Research shows that you are not alone, most cravings can be overcome with distraction. You need to distract yourself for about 10-15 minutes or until the craving passes.
So what is the best way to distract yourself and stop that struggle with cravings?
Get your hands moving or dirty!
Get out in the garden, or mow the lawn
Clean the bathroom
Paint your nails
Have a bath
Do the ironing
If your hands are busy then you can't reach for food, you need to get yourself away from the kitchen. If you are just sitting watching TV then you have time to think about eating, but if you are busy doing something that keeps your hands and mind occupied, then you are less likely to crave something to eat.
When trying to lose weight the struggle with cravings is even more difficult, but if you can't control the cravings, instead of reaching for the junk food which will just raise your sugar levels and cause more cravings, grab a small handful of pepitas (pumpkin seeds) or a few almonds, a slice of cheese could work, or drink a hot cup of herbal tea.
Make your meals more filling by adding seeds, lentils or legumes to your salads. Make sure that you are getting enough essential fatty acids such as nuts, olive oil or flaxseed oil on your salad or steamed veges. This will help to satisfy your appetite.
If you do still feel hungry, think about when the last time you had something to drink was. If it has been more than a couple of hours ago then you might be mistaking thirst for hunger. Have a drink of water instead of eating and see how you feel then.
Keep reminding yourself that cookies, cakes and candy bars are low in nutrition, and extremely high in carbohydrates. These foods could also set a cycle of cravings which you will find even more difficult to control!
